Upper School (Years 11 – 12)

Overview

Applecross Senior High School offers a broad range of courses in Years 11 and 12 to meet the interests and needs of students. These courses:

build on content of previous subjects and programs
ensure that Applecross students are able to study similar courses to those offered in other parts of Australia
provide multiple pathways to university, training organisations and employment, and
count towards university entrance.

All courses have a number of specified outcomes. Courses are organised into units that will require 55 hours to teach and each unit has specific content and contexts that provide the basis for the teaching program.

The units are at various stages:

Stage 1 units provide bridging support and a practical focus to help students develop skills for progress to Stage 2 units or post-school options including TAFE, apprenticeships and traineeships and the workplace.
Stage 2 units provide opportunities for applied learning with more focus on academic learning for progress to Stage 3 units or post-school options including TAFE, apprenticeships and traineeships, university and the workplace.
Stage 3 units provide opportunities to extend knowledge and understandings in academic learning contexts. The post-school pathway is typically university.

Applecross offers a flexible curriculum for senior secondary school students intending to enter employment or further training on leaving school. Students may choose to enrol in industry-specific Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses or integrate units of competency in general courses. Opportunities to complete VET through a range of programs, such as school-based traineeships, will continue.

Flexible Learning Program

This is available to students who believe, and have demonstrated through the options they have chosen, that they are practical learners. Students and parents need to be aware that places in this program are limited and are only allocated after an interview and the signing of a contract. This course will consist of English, Mathematics, Career and Enterprise and Science. For management reasons, these subjects have been chosen because they are related very strongly to all work places.

The goal of the Flexible Learning Program is to prepare students for a smooth transition into further training and the workplace by gaining industry-specific skills and by networking with employers.

Students must have:

a strong work ethic and a high attendance rate
a demonstrated commitment to meeting deadlines
the necessary maturity and commitment to perform in the workplace (often not in your immediate area)
the support of parents who encourage their child to move out of their comfort zone and take responsibility for achieving their goals.

Term Dates

Term 2 concludes for students on Friday 5th July. Term 3 commences for students on Tuesday 23rd July.
Uniform Shop

In Terms 2 & 3 the shop is open each Monday 1pm to 4pm, and Wednesday 8am to 11.30am.
Car Parking

Due to the building project the main car park is now out of use. Parents are asked to drop off & pick up either on Ardessie St or Links Rd. The front driveway is NOT a kiss & drive zone.
