The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme

Applecross Senior High School offers The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme to all interested students, commencing in Year 9.

This prestigious youth Award has been in existence since 1956 and celebrated its 50th anniversary, in Australia, in June 2008. It is an International Award, operating in over 120 countries around the world and its patron in our State is the Governor of Western Australia.

The Award is designed to empower young people by enhancing their self reliance, commitment, personal development, self confidence and leadership skills. It is also a Curriculum Council of Western Australia endorsed program, with its Service component counting towards the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) requirements.

There are three Award levels depending on a participant’s age and the amount of time that they are prepared to devote to the scheme. Minimum times are Bronze 6 months, Silver 12 months, and Gold 18 months. Each Award consists of a badge and a certificate.

To receive an Award, a person is required to complete four different activities, one from each of the following categories:

Recreation – indoor or outdoor activities like archery, canoeing, judo, football and rock climbing. These help to improve fitness.

Skills – useful activities like cookery, driving, photography, pottery and public speaking. These help to discover hidden talents.

Service – involves assisting in the community with conservation projects, child care, care of animals and museums. These help to show how the community works.

Adventurous Journeys/Expedition – ventures like a two day bicycle trip or a three day bushwalking expedition in a remote area. This helps to develop self reliance.

As well as receiving an International Award, participants gain qualities that will be useful in their employment, around the home, in relationships and for the rest of their lives.
