Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entrance Program

Proudly Offering Extension, Enrichment & Differentiation in the Visual Arts

The Gifted and Talented Education: Visual Arts program was established at Applecross Senior High School in 1968, it was the first program of its type in Western Australia, and celebrated 40 years of excellence in 2008. Our prestigious Visual Arts program produces graduates highly regarded by tertiary institutions and arts industry due to our tradition of excellence and reputation for success.

The program has an excellent retention record, and students enrolled at Year 7 level continue with their studies through to Year 12.

This unique Visual Arts program offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a range of highly specialised studio disciplines during regular Saturday morning workshops conducted by professional artists and practicing crafts persons. Our student’s benefit from exhibiting their artwork and being involved in community art projects.

This differentiated curriculum offers the participant exposure to contemporary Visual Arts practice, current exhibitions, and collaborative involvement in studio workshops that provide a stimulating and supportive environment for the gifted and talented student. We help our students achieve their potential by encouraging them to conceptualise, explore sophisticated visual communication techniques, and develop a breadth and depth of personal investigation.

Successful Gifted and Talented Visual Art program Graduates

Abdul Abdullah
Two time Archibald prize for portraiture Finalist. Abdul was named a Finalist in the prestigious Archibald prize for Portraiture for the second time in 2013. Abdul made headlines when he was first selected as a Finalist in 2011 as he was the youngest to ever become a Finalist, and the first Islamic artist to be represented in the history of the Award. Abdul graduated from the Gifted & Talented Visual Art Program in 2003.

Nationally and internationally acclaimed Painter.

Tane Andrews
Gifted Draughtsman & Fashion Designer. After graduating in 2003 Tane and fellow class member Kira Goodey developed their own highly successful fashion label. 'Of Cabbages & Kings', a label that has become very well known in the United Kingdom. Tane has also followed his interest in drawing and has had a number of highly successful gallery showings.

Elisha Quintal
Fashion Designer. Gained a considerable amount of exposure in the local fashion industry for her very popular label 'The Butcher & The Crow'. Elisha, who continues to develop her label, and also works as a Fashion design Lecturer at Challenger TAFE, graduated from the GATE Visual Art program in 2003.

David Woodland
Became an exhibiting ceramic artist and part time fine art lecturer at Curtin University of Technology. Since 1999, David has worked as an Art Director and Matte Painter in Feature Film visual effects in Sydney and London.
