Ships Ahoy! Natalie Wheble sails the Leeuwin!

With thanks to the Department of Communities, Year 12 student Natalie Wheble successfully applied for one of ten Leeuwin Volunteer Internships. This is a brand new initiative and funding has been approved for the next few years.

This is an opportunity for Natalie to develop her skills and leadership by committing to a year-long volunteering role with the Leeuwin. The program includes two x 7 day sails and 4 x 1 day sails throughout the year as well as various workshops and assisting with the upcoming refit.

This sailing aspect is not a leisurely cruise but a working ship, so during the voyage, interns will take part in a whole heap of hands-on activities, from:

  • Navigating the ship and taking the helm
  • Setting and furling the sails
  • Climbing the masts and working aloft
  • Standing watch while sailing through the night

Weather conditions, watch roster and ship positioning affects the schedule so there is never a dull moment.

Natalie left today for her first 7 day sail along with her fellow interns, Leewin crew and Captain Sarah Robinson and Education Manager Michelle Reidy-Crofts (ex Applecross teacher). During the last full day of the voyage it’s all handed over to the new interns. Together they will nominate a ship’s crew from within their teams – who has shown leadership, team management and capability? It could be you next year!. Knowledge and skills are tested and the crew must work together to chart the ship’s course to a new anchorage.

On International Women’s Day it was great to watch the excitement of Captain Sarah Robinson, Education Manager Michelle Reidy-Crofts and Intern Natalie Wheble begin their journey from the B Shed at Fremantle.
